Red tide in San Diego

Dull red by day and blue neon by night. Bioluminescence also known as Chemiluminescence is the result of a chemical reaction happening inside of plankton. This is a very similar reaction to a fire fly and other glow in the dark creatures. Some of these planktons and algae can be dangerous for humans and animals to consume. In my research it seems that we don’t have that issue in the San Diego area. Either the plankton/algae isn’t the dangerous variety OR. There isn’t enough concentration of dangerous plankton/algae to present problems. That’s good news considering I just got done surfing..

Glowing Ocean

All the photos I have posted in this blog were taken between 8 and 8:30pm. The sun set in San Diego at 7:30pm, it doesn’t take long for the glow to appear.

Bioluminescent Surfing

The glow in the ocean is a sight to see. but splashing around in the water. Floating at night in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. With every move producing a halo of neon around you. Definitely one of the more unique things you can experience in life.. This night I was content being on the beach and enjoying the spectacle. Tonight I plan on going out with my gopro to see what I can get. As Well as check out a few other locations around San Diego for more photos.

beautiful photos! I had never heard of it with the tide and waves rolling like that. Look forward to seeing the GoPro vids from tonight.

I’ve seen that in Hood Canal in Washington State. Went out in a canoe at night and just sat still. Fish swimming under us were lighting up the water with their zinging around. It was magical.

It was awesome to sit and photograph, but surfing in it was much better. Quite the experience, the video doesn’t do it justice. I think being in a boat would be a really great way of enjoying it!.. I am uploading the video now..
