Holcomb Valley

Big Bear Lake
Sport climbing in Big Bear Lake California – Rob Wessels Photography

Big Bear Lake California

Holcomb Valley is located on the north eastern side of Big Bear Lake. This side of the lake is commonly referred to as the Fawnskin side. Which is the name of the town on that side of the lake.

Directions to Climbing Area

To access the Holcomb climbing area you will want to take Polique Canyon rd off of Highway 38. Not Holcomb Valley rd.

Holcomb Valley rd dead ends into a neighborhood.

Once on Polique Canyon rd dive in maybe a mile or so. At the “T” intersection go right to continue on to Polique Canyon rd.

Going left will put you on 2n71, which is a nice drive but takes you in the complete opposite direction.

Continuing down Polique Canyon rd (2n09) the road crosses the pacific crest trail. Passing that you descend down towards Holcomb valley with Holcomb Valley ranch to your left (west). After passing that there will be a very obvious road available to take to the right. That is Holcomb Valley rd. Continuing straight at this point takes you onto 3n16 which is again a nice drive but in the wrong direction.

Once on this portion of Holcomb Valley rd take your first left. On the map this is Holcomb Pinnacles Camp rd. This is the road that will take you to the climbing area.

Not to be confused with the camping area.

Even if your not climbing

This area of Big Bear is a great place to explore. With places to hike and go 4 wheeling. I was just recently up in Big Bear during a snowstorm. We tow each other on snowboards through some fresh powder.
